Things to Do in St. Thomas with Kids (2026 Family Guide)

St. Thomas is the Caribbean with US convenience built in. 🇻🇮

One of the most beautiful ports in the Eastern Caribbean — and since it’s a US territory, families get all that without international fees, currency exchange, or unfamiliar logistics. Magens Bay alone is worth the port stop. Here’s what else is worth your time with kids.

⚡ St. Thomas with Kids — Quick Overview

🇺🇸

What “US territory” actually means for your family

St. Thomas is part of the US Virgin Islands — a US territory — which makes it logistically easier than most Caribbean ports. Here’s what that means in practice:

  • No international phone charges — your US plan works normally
  • USD everywhere — no currency exchange, no conversion math
  • US customs rules apply — $1,600 duty-free allowance per person (higher than most Caribbean ports)
  • Familiar food and pharmacy options — helpful if kids need anything
  • English is the primary language everywhere

📋 Best Things to Do in St. Thomas with Kids

🏖️

Magens Bay Beach

Top Pick All Ages Half Day

Magens Bay is consistently listed among the most beautiful beaches in the world — and it earns it. The beach is long, wide, and sheltered by hills on both sides, which keeps the water exceptionally calm and shallow. It’s ideal for young kids who want to swim without waves. Chair and umbrella rentals are available, there’s a snack bar and restaurant on site, and the surrounding scenery is genuinely stunning.

For most families visiting St. Thomas, Magens Bay should be the anchor activity. It’s about 20–25 minutes by taxi from the cruise pier and there’s a small per-person entry fee.

💡 Tip: Go early. Magens Bay gets crowded on busy cruise days. Arriving within the first hour of port time gets you first pick of chairs and the best experience. The taxi queue at the pier can have a wait — don’t delay.

🐬

Coral World Ocean Park

Kid Favorite All Ages

Coral World is a marine life park on the northeastern tip of St. Thomas — genuinely one of the best kid-specific activities on the island. The underwater observatory lets you descend below the surface and watch Caribbean reef life through panoramic windows. There are stingray pools, a shark habitat, sea turtles, a nature trail through native plants, and interactive animal feeding experiences.

For families with younger kids or those who aren’t strong swimmers, Coral World delivers a rich marine experience without needing to get in the water. It pairs well with Magens Bay — Coral World in the morning, beach in the afternoon.

💡 Tip: Book tickets online before you sail for a small discount. Allow 2–3 hours minimum. Coral World is on the eastern end of the island — about 30 minutes by taxi from the cruise pier.

🐟

Snorkeling at Coki Beach

World Class Ages 5+

Coki Beach is right next to Coral World on the eastern end of the island — and it has some of the best snorkeling accessible directly from shore in St. Thomas. The reef starts just feet from the beach in shallow, calm water. Fish variety is excellent and the water is clear. Gear rental is available on the beach.

For families where the kids want to snorkel and the adults want to watch from shore, Coki is nearly perfect — shallow enough to stand in most of the snorkel area and calm enough for nervous beginners.

💡 Tip: Combine Coki Beach with Coral World since they’re right next to each other. The beach can get busy with vendors — keep an eye on belongings and agree on gear rental prices before you take anything.

Paradise Point Gondola & Views

Easy Activity All Ages Walkable from Pier

The Paradise Point gondola rides up the hillside directly from near the cruise pier and delivers panoramic views over Charlotte Amalie harbor, the cruise ships, and the surrounding islands. It’s a short ride up, there’s a bar and gift shop at the top, and kids genuinely love the gondola itself. The views are postcard-perfect and it’s an easy add-on to a shopping morning near the pier.

💡 Tip: Best done in the morning before clouds roll in over the hills. The ride takes about 5 minutes each way. Book tickets at the bottom — it rarely sells out but lines can build later in the day.

🛍️

Charlotte Amalie Shopping & Forts

Walkable from Pier All Ages Free to explore

Charlotte Amalie is St. Thomas’s main town — walkable from the cruise pier and one of the Caribbean’s premier duty-free shopping destinations. The $1,600 per-person duty-free allowance makes it genuinely attractive for parents shopping for jewelry, electronics, or liquor. For kids, Fort Christian (a 17th-century Danish fort right at the waterfront) is a quick and interesting stop, and the colorful Danish colonial architecture makes for a nice walk.

💡 Tip: Shopping is best earlier in the day before the heat peaks. Main Street has the most concentrated shopping. The covered Vendors’ Plaza near the waterfront has local crafts and souvenirs at better prices than the main jewelry stores.

⛴️ Day Trip: Trunk Bay on St. John

✨ Is the St. John ferry worth it with kids?

Trunk Bay on St. John is widely considered one of the most beautiful beaches and snorkel spots in the entire Caribbean — a National Park beach with a marked underwater snorkel trail, stunning clear water, and scenery that genuinely takes your breath away. If your family loves snorkeling and you have enough port time, it’s worth the trip.

The honest caveat: the logistics add up. Taxi to Red Hook, ferry to Cruz Bay, taxi to Trunk Bay, reverse it all on the way back. Budget at least 6 hours of port time and don’t cut it close. Families who do it right consistently call it a cruise highlight. Families who rushed it wished they’d just gone to Magens Bay.

Step 1: Pier → Red Hook

~30 min taxi from cruise pier. Ask for the St. John ferry dock at Red Hook.

Step 2: Ferry to Cruz Bay

~20 min ferry crossing. Runs frequently. ~$7 per person each way.

Step 3: Cruz Bay → Trunk Bay

~15 min taxi from Cruz Bay ferry dock. Small NPS entrance fee on arrival.

Step 4: Reverse it all

Leave Trunk Bay with at least 90 min before all-aboard. Don’t cut this close.

📌 Honest Tips for Families in St. Thomas

🚕

Taxis are shared vans — this is normal.

St. Thomas taxis are often open-air safari-style trucks or vans that pick up multiple passengers going the same direction. Don’t be surprised if your taxi to Magens Bay stops to pick up others along the way. It’s completely normal, the prices are set per person per destination, and it’s part of the island experience.

☀️

Mornings are the best time for beaches and activities.

St. Thomas gets hot quickly and afternoon clouds can roll in over the hills. The best light, the best water temperature, and the best experience at Magens Bay or Coki Beach is in the morning. Get off the ship early and save shopping for the return.

🛍️

The duty-free allowance is genuinely good.

At $1,600 per person duty-free (vs. $800 at most other Caribbean ports), St. Thomas is legitimately one of the best shopping ports in the Caribbean. If parents are jewelry or electronics shoppers, this is worth noting. Main Street in Charlotte Amalie has the most concentrated shopping.

If you’re going to St. John, leave more time than you think.

The St. John trip is wonderful but the logistics are genuinely multi-step — taxi, ferry, taxi, beach, reverse. Give yourself at least 90 minutes back to the ship from Trunk Bay. Families who miscalculate the return trip end up rushing and stressed, which ruins an otherwise beautiful day.

📱

Your US phone plan works normally here.

As a US territory, St. Thomas is covered by most US domestic phone plans. You can use Google Maps, look things up, and stay connected without international charges. Download offline maps as a backup in case of coverage gaps in less developed areas.

💡 What to skip

The “Skyride to Paradise Point” is fun but optional — skip it if you’re short on time. The beaches at the cruise pier area are not representative of St. Thomas at its best — get in a taxi and go to Magens Bay. And don’t try to do both Coral World and St. John in one port day unless you have 8+ hours — it’s too much with kids.
