⚡ The Quick Answer
- ✓ Bring every diaper you need, plus about four days’ worth spare.
- ✓ Ship shops carry a token selection at a premium. Treat it as an emergency, not a plan.
- ✓ Formula and any specific food should travel with you in full.
- ✓ Cabin fridges are often coolers, not proper refrigerators.
- ✓ Pack a day’s supplies in your carry-on. Cabin luggage can arrive late.
The real constraint on a cruise with a baby is not the ship, it is the suitcase. Everything else about cruising with an infant is easier than people fear.
Here is how to work out what you actually need and how to make it fit.
🧳 The Diaper Maths
Work from your real daily number rather than an average from an article, then add a buffer for the things that change on holiday: heat, different food, more swimming, a disrupted routine. Stomach upsets are more likely away from home, not less.
- Daily count × nights, then add four days. The spare is for the day something goes wrong, and something usually does.
- Add swim diapers separately. They are not interchangeable and splash zones often expect a reusable over a disposable.
- Wipes: double what you think. They end up doing hands, faces, tables and spills, not just changes.
- Pack a day’s worth in the carry-on. Cabin luggage is delivered over several hours on embarkation day.
- Diapers compress. Open the bag, squash them into gaps around everything else. They are bulky, not heavy.
🚨 The ship shop is not a backup
Onboard shops carry a token selection of one or two brands in a couple of sizes, at convenience prices, and they sell out on family sailings. Port shops vary enormously and may not stock anything you recognize. Plan as though neither exists.
🍼 Formula, Milk and Bottles
Bring all of it. Formula brands and preparations differ by country and this is not the week to switch, and specific foods your baby will actually eat are not worth gambling on.
The fridge is probably a cooler
Many cabin fridges chill rather than refrigerate. If you need milk properly cold, ask guest services on day one. They can often help.
Ask about water
If you are making up formula, ask what water is recommended on board. A water package is often easier than carrying bottles from the buffet.
Sterilizing is the awkward part
Cabins have no kettles on most lines and steam sterilizers are usually prohibited. Cold-water sterilizing tablets and a lidded container travel well.
The buffet is better than you expect
Plain rice, pasta, fruit and steamed vegetables are available all day, and most galleys will mash or blend on request.

📦 Can You Have Supplies Delivered?
Families often ask about shipping a box of diapers to the port or to the ship. It is far less straightforward than it sounds and is not something to build a plan around.
Cruise terminals are secure facilities and most will not receive parcels for passengers. Some lines accept pre-ordered onboard deliveries through their own gift or convenience service, which is a different thing from a courier. A more reliable option, if you are staying near the port the night before, is delivering to your hotel and adding it to your luggage — with the hotel’s agreement in advance.
Unreliable
Courier to the terminal
Most terminals will not accept parcels for passengers. Do not depend on it.
Sometimes
The line's own gift service
Some lines sell convenience items for delivery to your cabin. Limited range, ordered in advance.
Works
Pre-cruise hotel delivery
Ship to the hotel you are staying at the night before, with their agreement. Then it is just luggage.
Works
Buy near the port
A supermarket run the day before you sail is the simplest solution of all.
✅ The Short Version
- Pack every diaper and every scoop of formula, plus a real buffer.
- A day’s supplies go in the carry-on, always.
- Ask guest services about the fridge on day one if milk needs to stay properly cold.
- Cold-water sterilizing travels better than anything electrical.
- Do a supermarket run near the port the day before if you want a cushion.
Bulk is the only real problem here, and it is a problem that solves itself as the week goes on. You will fly home with a noticeably emptier suitcase, which is a good use of the space you paid for.
