Cruise Ship Babysitting and Nurseries: What It Costs

The free kids club starts at three. Below that, childcare is a paid service — if the ship has one at all. 🧸

Families book cruises partly for the childcare, then discover that the free, well-staffed club they read about does not take their child. For under-threes the picture is different: a paid nursery on some ships, nothing at all on others, and a late-night service that is charged by the hour for every age. Here is how it actually works.

⚡ The Quick Answer

This is the single biggest gap between what families expect from a cruise and what they get, and it is entirely avoidable if you check before booking.

Three separate services get called “childcare” on a cruise ship, and they work quite differently.

🧸 The Three Things You Are Choosing Between

Included

The kids club

Free, daytime and early evening, generally from age three and requires potty training. This is the one in the brochure.

Paid

The nursery

For under-threes on the ships that have one. Charged per hour, limited capacity, book as early as possible.

Paid

Late-night club hours

After a set cutoff the free club becomes a paid service, charged per child per hour, usually with a minimum.

Rare

In-cabin sitting

Offered by arrangement on some lines only. Ask at guest services on day one rather than assuming.

The important thing is that these are not tiers of one service. A ship can have an excellent kids club and no nursery whatsoever, which is exactly the combination that catches out parents of two year olds.

💸 What It Costs

Rates vary by line and change, so treat any specific figure you read on a forum as out of date. What does not change is the shape of the cost, and that is what to budget against.

🚨 Get the rate on day one

Ask for the current hourly rate, the minimum charge and the late-night cutoff during the embarkation day open house. Then you are deciding whether a night out is worth it, rather than finding out what it cost on the last morning.

📅 Booking It Before It Is Gone

Nursery capacity is genuinely small — a handful of children per session, staffed to strict ratios. On a full sailing with a lot of young families, the good slots go early.

📱

Book the moment it opens

Some lines take nursery reservations before you sail. If yours does, put a reminder in your calendar for the day it opens.

🚪

Go to the open house

Embarkation day is when the week's slots get taken. Turning up on day two is often too late for the evenings you wanted.

🕓

Book the evenings first

Daytime slots are easier to get. The dinner and show hours are the contested ones.

📝

Ask about the waitlist

Cancellations happen constantly. Being on the list costs nothing and frequently works.

✅ The Questions That Settle It

If childcare is a significant part of why you are choosing a cruise over a villa, get all five answered in writing before you pay a deposit. It is the one part of the trip that cannot be improvised once you are on board.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Do cruise ships have babysitting for toddlers?
Some do, through a paid nursery that typically takes children from around six months to three years. It is charged by the hour, has limited capacity and is not on every ship. The free kids club usually starts at three and requires potty training, so it does not cover toddlers in diapers.
How much does cruise ship childcare cost?
Nursery care and late-night club hours are both charged per child per hour, often with a minimum, and the charges land on your onboard account. Rates differ by line and change over time, so get the current rate and the minimum from the club on embarkation day rather than relying on figures posted online.
Is the cruise kids club free?
Daytime and early evening sessions are included in your fare. After a set cutoff, usually somewhere around ten or eleven at night, the club switches to a paid late-night service charged per child per hour. Nurseries for under-threes are paid from the start.
When should I book cruise nursery slots?
As early as your line allows, and then again at the embarkation day open house. Capacity is small because staffing ratios are strict, and the dinner and evening slots on a busy family sailing go first. Ask about the waitlist if your preferred times are taken.
Can I get a babysitter in my cabin on a cruise?
On some lines, by arrangement, but it is much less common than nursery or club care and is not something to assume. Ask at guest services on day one, and have a plan that does not depend on it.
